Newer Homes, Young Families and a Short Trip South
Boyd Acres is one of the City of Bend's neighborhood districts, listed by the City as Northeast Bend and part of Deschutes County. It carries the name of Charles Boyd, who arrived in 1904 to expand his cattle business and became the largest meat supplier in the Bend area. The core of his ranch was sold to developers in 1978 as the city grew north.
The Charles Boyd Homestead Group, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, still stands inside the district. Today Empire Ave, NE Boyd Acres Rd, NE 18th St and Cooley Rd cross Boyd Acres, and both the Bend Parkway and NE 3rd St pass through it. The Pilot Butte, North Unit Main and Swalley canals wind through the district as well.
Boyd Park, designed with input from the neighborhood association, has a multi-age playground, a picnic pavilion, a half-court and soft-surface trails winding between rock outcroppings. On the district's west edge, Sawyer Park follows both banks of the Deschutes River, and birders have recorded more than 140 species there.
School runs shape the week for many households here. Lava Ridge, Ponderosa and North Star elementaries and Sky View Middle School all fall inside Boyd Acres. Awbrey Butte sits across the river to the west, and River West lies to the southwest.
Protecting Young Teeth in Boyd Acres Households
With four schools inside the district, prevention does most of the work for local families. Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar before it turns into decay, and each exam checks for cavities, gum problems and signs of oral cancer. Digital x-rays give our dentists quick, detailed images with significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays.
Sealants are one of the simplest steps a parent can take. A thin coating on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth helps keep food and bacteria out of the grooves where cavities often start. The practice describes sealants as especially beneficial for children, though adults can have them too.
Parents with more questions about x-rays, flossing or sensitive teeth can find short answers on our dental FAQs page.
When a cavity does show up, tooth-colored fillings repair it without a silver spot in the smile. As kids reach middle and high school, the focus often shifts to crowding and wisdom teeth, and catching those early gives Boyd Acres families more choices.
Parents who work on the north end can also make use of Friday mornings. Our Third Street office opens at 7:00 AM on Fridays, so a checkup can come before the workday starts. Monday through Thursday, we see patients from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
From First Checkups to Clear Aligners: A Dentist Near Boyd Acres
Preventative Dentistry
Cleanings, exams, digital x-rays and sealants keep children's teeth healthy from the first visit onward. Parents can book their own checkups through the same office.
Restorative Dentistry
Tooth-colored fillings handle most cavities, while crowns, bridges and root canal therapy cover bigger repairs. Each option is explained in plain language before treatment.
Invisalign®
Removable clear aligners straighten crowded teeth for teens and adults. Treatment is planned with advanced 3D imaging, and the trays come out for meals and brushing.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Third molars usually arrive in the late teens or early twenties. When they crowd the bite, damage nearby teeth or cause infection, removing them protects the rest of the smile.
Cosmetic Dentistry
Bonding can fix a chipped or misshapen tooth, and professional whitening or porcelain veneers are available for adults who want a brighter look.
Meet Your Third Street Dentists
Two of the six dentists north-end families can meet are Dr. Madeleine Hoskins and Dr. Haley Van Volkenburg. Dr. Hoskins spent her final year of dental school at the University of Washington working in a Spokane community health clinic, and she takes a minimally invasive approach. Dr. Van Volkenburg grew up in Roseburg, earned her dental degree at OHSU in 2019 and is a member of the Oregon Dental Association.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Bend Family Dentistry from Boyd Acres, and how do I get there?
It is 3.4 miles from Boyd Park to our office, about 9 minutes behind the wheel. You take Empire Ave west, NE Boyd Acres Rd south, NE Butler Market Rd, NE Studio Rd and NE Underwood Ave, then NE 3rd St south. For a dentist near Boyd Acres, the final mile is a simple run south on NE 3rd St.
Are dental sealants only for kids?
No, adults can get sealants too, although they are especially beneficial for children. The coating goes on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where grooves trap food and bacteria. Our dentists check at each exam whether a child's newly erupted molars or an adult's deep grooves would benefit from that extra layer of protection.
How do you keep track of crowding and wisdom teeth as kids grow?
We watch for both at routine exams, using digital x-rays to see teeth that have not come in yet. Wisdom teeth typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties, so problems can often be spotted ahead of time. If crowding develops, Invisalign is an option for teens, and our dentists explain the choices well before anything is urgent.
Why do you use digital x-rays instead of film?
Digital x-rays are quicker, more detailed and use significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays. The images appear instantly on screen, so our dentists can show you exactly what they see during the same visit. That makes them a comfortable choice for children and for adults who want to understand their own treatment.
How do I find out what my plan covers for my family's care?
Share your plan details when you book, and our insurance team will review them. We work with a multitude of insurance providers and give you a detailed breakdown of costs and likely coverage before any treatment. We also process your claims, so you are not left filing paperwork for each child's visit.
