The following information is for those patients who want to learn more about dental implants and how they work. We hope these questions and answers will help you make an educated decision concerning your tooth replacement needs.
Are you or a loved one self-conscious about missing teeth? Dental implants could be the perfect solution to your needs. Implants effectively fill the unwanted gaps in your smile due to missing teeth. Dental implants are designed to blend naturally with your other teeth, producing a beautiful smile.
Dental implant surgery is a common option for replacing missing teeth. Unlike removable dentures that rest on the gumline, dental implants are a long-term treatment that is surgically implanted into the jaw. These implanted, artificial teeth look and function like real teeth.
How dental implant surgery is performed depends on the type of implant and the condition of your jawbone. Dental implants are implanted into the jawbone where they replace the roots of the teeth that are missing. The implants contain titanium that, when implanted into the jaw fuses with the jawbone. Once fusion occurs, the dental implants hold firmly in place, they do not slip or make noise.
- Improved appearance
- Improved speech
- Improved comfort
- Easier eating
- Working teeth are not affected
- Long-lasting
Minor side-effects of dental implant surgery may include:
- Swelling of the gums
- Swelling of the face
- Pain at the implant site
- Bleeding
These side effects are relatively mild and often improve shortly. You will be instructed to eat only soft foods for up to one week.
The dental implants used in the All-on-4™ procedure are specially designed to use as few dental implants as possible while giving proper support and stability. Traditionally, 6-8 dental implants would need to be placed to give similar support to a traditional denture. By placing the dental implants at a slight angle, it is possible to use fewer dental implants which decreases the cost and healing time. This also has the advantage of not requiring a bone graft for most patients prior to surgery.
The ideal candidate for the All-on-4™ dental implant procedure is someone who is currently wearing dentures or who is headed in that direction. Age does not matter, but all dental implant candidates should be in good health.
